Catholic theology of Judaism and its biblical foundations

This paper addresses the question of how the Catholic theology of Judaism ought to be properly understood. Theological reflection on Israel’s place in God’s economy of salvation may be shaped by various models, including “replacement theology” (supersessionism), “two-covenant theology” (dispensationalism), and “inclusion theology.” The last of these, rooted in the Pauline image of the olive tree (Rom 11:16–24), seems to offer the most adequate account of the complex relationship between the Church and the Synagogue, while also providing a basis for a balanced theological appraisal of Judaism in contemporary Catholic thought.
