Φιλαργυρία, or One Root of All Evil? An Analysis of 1 Timothy 6 : 10a

The author of this article presents an analysis of a fragment of the First Epistle to Timothy and responds to the basic question of if love of money (φιλαργυρία) indeed is the root of all evil. The author analyzes St. Paul’s relationship to the philosophy of the stoics in the context of the term αὐτάρκεια. Next, he presents the word φιλαργυρία from a semantic perspective. He in turn discusses the key words “root” (ῥίζα), “all evil” (πάντον τῶν κακῶν), and “love of money” (φιλαργυρία). The lack of the definite article (ἡ) by the word “root” (ῥίζα) necessitates that it be treated in a qualitative way. Thus, ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία should be understood as follows: love of money is not the only root of evil, but one of many among others.
