From the beginning of the nineteenth century, many clerics and lay faithful petitioned the Holy See to proclaim St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church and to insert his name into the Canon of the Mass. The latter request met with strong resistance from numerous liturgists. A decisive turning point came with the intervention of Bishop Petar Čule of Mostar during the first session of the Second Vatican Council. Drawing on theological arguments developed by eminent specialists in Josephology, the Bosnian bishop publicly called for the inclusion of St. Joseph in the Eucharistic Prayer. In his address, he emphasized that, by virtue of his unique role in the mystery of the Incarnation, St. Joseph deserves the form of veneration known as protodulia. Three days after the Mostar bishop’s intervention, Pope John XXIII ordered that the name of St. Joseph be inserted into the Roman Canon, effective 8 December 1962.
