Abstrakt

Nazareth was the place where Jesus Christ lived, was raised, and worked from the return from Egypt until the beginning of His public ministry of proclaiming the Kingdom of God and calling for repentance. For this reason, this town located in Galilee holds great significance for Christians, not only from a pilgrimage perspective but also from a scholarly one. The Evangelists’ fourfold designation of this locality as polis has generated both interest and controversy, as archaeological research has led to the conclusion that Nazareth in the Greco-Roman period did not fulfill the classical concept of the polis. An analysis of the available biblical, philological, and sociological data, as well as the most recent archaeological discoveries, leads to the conclusion that the Evangelists did not err in referring to Nazareth as a polis, although the Latin term vicus, denoting a small town situated in proximity to a larger metropolis, would be more precise in the context of that period.
