Polish Pilgrimages to the Holy Land in the Interwar Period

The article presents the phenomenon of Polish national pilgrimages to the Holy Land in the interwar period, analyzing both their course and the memoir literature of their participants. The author discusses successive pilgrimages organized from 1929 onward, indicating their spiritual leaders, routes, organization, and religious as well as national significance. Particular attention is devoted to the memoir accounts of Fr. Józef Kłos, Zofia Kossak, Anastazy Czarnowski, and Kazimierz Marian Morawski, which reveal various aspects of pilgrimage: spirituality, travel logistics, perceptions of the holy places, as well as social and cultural observations concerning Palestine, Egypt, Greece, and Constantinople. An important thread is also the role of the Polish ships SS Polonia and SS Kościuszko on the Palestinian route, as well as the presence of Polish institutions and diplomatic representatives in the Middle East. The text demonstrates that these pilgrimages were not only a religious practice, but also an expression of Polish national identity, communal solidarity, and cultural presence beyond the borders of the country.
