Abstract

The Epistle to the Galatians is marked by an ambivalence between fidelity and infidelity to the Gospel. The faith of the Galatian community appears fragile and therefore requires a form of guidance. For this reason, according to the Apostle, the community’s fidelity to the Gospel remains a sine qua non condition for its growth. In the presentation of the facts in Gal 4:12–20, the epistolary paradigm gives the text a distinctive connotation. Paul brings back to the surface the memory of his first visit to this region and of the enthusiasm shown by the Galatians both toward him and toward the Gospel. It can therefore be understood that this passage bears an anamnetic imprint, seeking to revive affective memories and to give priority to Paul’s fraternal relationship with the Galatians. The Apostle thus aims to restore their attachment to his person and to the message of the Gospel that he had proclaimed to them.
