L’Épître aux Galates est traversée par une ambivalence entre fidélité et infidélité à l’Évangile. La foi de la communauté galate apparaît fragile et requiert, par conséquent, une forme de tutelle. C’est pourquoi la fidélité de la communauté à l’Évangile demeure, selon l’Apôtre, une condition sine qua non de sa croissance. Dans l’exposition des faits de la section Ga 4, 12–20, le paradigme épistolaire confère au texte une connotation singulière. Paul fait remonter à la surface le souvenir de sa première visite dans cette région et l’enthousiasme manifesté par les Galates tant à son égard qu’à l’égard de l’Évangile. On comprend dès lors que ce passage porte une empreinte anamnétique, cherchant à raviver les souvenirs affectifs et à privilégier sa relation fraternelle avec les Galates. L’Apôtre vise donc à rétablir leur attachement à sa personne et au message de l’Évangile qu’il leur a annoncé.
