The Garments of Jesus in John 19:23–24: Fulfillment of Scripture or Christological Midrash?

The motif of Jesus’ garments appears in all four Gospels (Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34), but it receives its fullest treatment in the Gospel according to John (John 19:23–24). It is precisely the Fourth Gospel that most clearly emphasizes the connection between this motif and Ps 22:19. The expanded, two-stage procedure and the differentiated terminology appear intended to reproduce the Old Testament text. At the same time, this Gospel does not contain either the citation of Ps 22:2 found in Matt 27:46 and Mark 15:34 or the citation of Ps 22:9 found in Matt 27:43 and cf. Luke 23:35. A comparison of the terminology of Ps 22 (21):19 in the Hebrew and Greek versions constitutes the first step toward determining to what extent John 19:23–24 draws directly on Ps 22 (21), and to what extent it does so through the mediation of the Septuagint (LXX). The principal issue, however, is the nature of the use of Ps 22 (21):19 in John 19:23–24. This question is decisive for the interpretation of the word ὁ χιτών, which is often understood beyond the literal level. Is this non-literal dimension inscribed in the text itself, or is it rather the result of a theological biblical hermeneutic? How does the use of Ps 22:19 in John 19:23–24 alter the interpretive horizon? How does hermeneutics affect the translation of John 19:23–24? These are the questions this article seeks to answer.
