Macheront – odkrycie i historia badań archeologicznych

Artykuł przedstawia historię badań nad twierdzą Macheront – od jej identyfikacji w XIX wieku po najnowsze badania archeologiczne. W oparciu o starożytne źródła pisane, zwłaszcza przekazy Józefa Flawiusza, oraz wyniki wykopalisk prowadzonych w latach 1968–2025 ukazano rozwój historyczny stanowiska od okresu hasmonejskiego i herodiańskiego aż po jego zniszczenie w czasie pierwszej wojny żydowskiej. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono pozostałościom herodiańskiej cytadeli pałacowej oraz znaczeniu Macherontu jako miejsca uwięzienia i śmierci Jana Chrzciciela. Artykuł podsumowuje także aktualny stan badań archeologicznych.
