Martys or martyr? On the (possible) martyrological dimension of witness in Opus Lucanum

The purpose of this study is to trace the occurrence and meaning of the Greek term martys (“witness”) in Opus Lucanum in order to draw conclusions about a possible martyrological dimension of Luke’s theology of witness. Against the background of Allison A. Trites’s analyses of the Apocalypse, the article seeks to determine as precisely as possible the meaning of martys and other words from the martyreō family in their occurrences in the Third Gospel (2) and the Acts of the Apostles (13), as well as in their literary and theological contexts. The point of departure for the historical-critical and comparative analysis is the broad scholarly consensus regarding the significance of testimony and witness in Luke’s writings. The findings indicate a gradual evolution of the subject of witness in Acts. In conclusion, the term martys in Opus Lucanum does not yet denote a martyr.
