Between Theo-Drama and Liturgy: Balthasar and Corbon in Comparative Perspective

This article offers a comparative analysis of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theology of drama and Jean Corbon’s theology of the liturgy. It begins by examining the relationship between Trinitarian theology and Christology in both approaches. It then analyses the concept of kenosis, which both authors interpret not only in relation to the event of Christ, but also as a fundamental principle of the Triune God’s action in salvation history. The discussion also addresses liturgy from the perspectives of mystery, celebration, and life, as well as the biblical image of the river of the water of life as a shared motif in both conceptions. The identified similarities make it possible to formulate hypotheses concerning mutual influence: Corbon’s influence on Balthasar’s liturgical reflection and the possible influence of Balthasar’s theodramatic thought on Corbon’s reflection. The article demonstrates the complementarity of both visions and their significance for contemporary theology.
