“Do Not Quench the Spirit” (1 Thess 5:19): Biblical Roots and the Contemporary Role of Charism in the Liturgical and Prayer Dimension of the Church’s Life

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the biblical and contemporary understandings of the concept of charism and its role in the life of the Church. The biblical understanding of this concept, based on the texts of St. Paul, is updated by situating it within the sacramentological context of the Christian’s life vocation. The article then analyses two specific cases of charism understood in this way: the charism of the “ministry of mercy,” proposed by St. Faustina Kowalska, and the charism of the “ministry of thought,” identified by St. John Paul II. In both cases, the analysis focuses on the influence of these charisms on the liturgical and prayer life of the contemporary Church.
